Progressive Or Heresy?

There are a lot of things that get me fired up, anyone close to me knows that, but one thing that gets in my craw is the misuse of the Word of God. Now before I continue, I do not at all pretend to be any expert theologian, but I do believe the Lord teaches the “simple” and revealed Himself not first to the wise and learned, but to the lowest of the low, the shepherds. I do believe the Holy Spirit IS alive and active and brings illumination and breath to the Word as we read it, so when I read things, like I read tonight, by Christians, I get fired up, because it grieves my heart.

I was reading an article, and to be truthful, the title and the subject material does not really matter because it is a trend I am seeing more and more within the Christian realm. The trend? To be “Progressive in our thoughts and attitudes concerning the teachings of the Bible”. To be less traditional and conservative.

Believe it or not, the Bible is timeless. There is no need to try and change or progress it, because as it declares in Hebrews 4:12 “The Word of God is alive and active, sharper than any two edged sword dividing bone and marrow, soul and spirit” Alive and active are key words. Another scripture that comes to mind is found in Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever”. Did you catch that? HE doesn't change. Period. He meant what He said, and He said what He meant, and you know what? Some of what He says is HARD. Does anyone remember the account in the John where Jesus said, “[53] "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. ... [60] On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?" [61] Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? [62] Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! [63] The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you--they are full of the Spirit and life. [64] Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. - Jhn 6:53, 60-64 NIV

Yes, Jesus is Love, I do not deny and never would, but at times, His teachings didn't always sound like love. They were hard words, and He didn't apologize for it, not try to appease and be “progressive”. BECAUSE of His great Love, He spoke Truth, even when it hurt.

As Solomon said, “There is nothing new under the sun”. In Jesus’ day He had three camps of people, those who wanted Him to be their kind of revolutionary, the one who would overthrow the Roman empire and bring the Jews to power. The religious people who wanted Him to shut up and quit speaking what they believed was blasphemy, that He was indeed the Son of God, the only Way, The Truth and The Life, and those the simply believed He was who He said He was; Emmanuel, God with them, Jesus the One who would save His people from their sins.

Today, it’s the same thing. There is new movement within the Christian community that would seek to soften what Jesus said, to assume what He would or would not do. And yes there are great questions we might not know the answers to this side of eternity, but His stance on sin has not changed, for if it has, His death and resurrection were for naught. If He did not truly mean what He said, then He would be like a man, a liar and not God. But the fact is, as the Word declares, “as for God, His way is perfect”.

So when I hear about being more “progressive” in our thinking, red flags raise everywhere. Yes we/me, may be called “narrow-minded”, but I came to terms with that long ago in prayer when I questioned my “narrow-mindedness”. The Lord reminded me of the scripture, [13] "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. [14] But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. [15] "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. - Mat 7:13-15 NIV

We are called to share the love of Christ, always, and to act as He did, but that never means compromise. Have people misused and abused others with the Word of God?? OF COURSE, and that is never right and they will answer for it, but so will those that try to change the message of the Word.

Be wise my friends, read the Word, ask the Lord, He will lead you and He will guide you. [5] If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. [6] But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. - Jam 1:5-6 NIV
